Selling Plastics to Us
MBA Polymers has a sourcing strategy to source raw materials directly from recyclers of predominantly WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) and ELV (end-of-life vehicle) wastes. In this way our sources have the certainty that their scrap plastics are handled in compliance with Western standards and legislation.
The raw materials we source are typically shredded plastics-rich residue generated from the recycling of end-of-life durable goods.
We accept shredded plastic in many levels of purity, including plastics-rich streams from different types of electronics such as small home appliances, refrigerators, IT products (computers, printers), consumer electronics, and from other durable products such as automobiles, toys, etc.
These mixed plastics can contain moderate levels of contaminants such as metals, rubber, wood printed circuit boards, labels, fabrics, etc.
We source the following materials for the MBA Polymers plants:
USA
Our US plant functions as a pilot-scale production facility, where plastics from a wide variety of commingled waste streams from all over the world have been investigated and recycled. It is here that we test new raw materials, develop new technology, create custom material formulations, evaluate equipment and recycling processes, and conduct large-scale demonstration of recycling techniques, prior to introduction at our various global facilities. The US facility has the capacity to process truckload quantities of materials, but does not typically operate in a production mode.
Austria
Our Austrian facility has a processing capacity of 40,000 MT, and it processes mixed and shredded plastics sourced from E-Waste recycling facilities. Pictures of the type of materials that are sourced can be seen at right.
China
Our China facility also has a processing capacity of 40,000 MT, and processes mainly mixed and shredded plastics from E-Waste recycling facilities. Pictures of the type of materials we source can be seen at right. Materials are sourced from European, North American, Japanese, Australian, Chinese, and other Asian sources.
United Kingdom
Our UK facility, which opened in 2010 with a processing capacity of 60,000 MT/year (designed for expansion to 80,000 MT/year) is sourced with plastic-rich materials from ELV (end-of-life vehicles). After the metal recovery, proprietary post-shredder separation and pre-processing technologies are used to concentrate the plastics before they serve as raw materials in this facility.
Typical MBA Polymers raw material from E-Waste can have some remaining contaminants such as wood, rubber, metals, wires, printed circuit boards and moisture. Representative samples generally are enough to define whether a material type can be processed. The majority of the materials sourced are shredded materials with a size distribution as displayed in this photo (5–120 mm).
The First Steps Towards Developing a Lasting Sourcing Relationship
- Send a description (with photos) of the materials available (correspondence).
- Based upon the description we typically request to receive representative samples of the materials of interest (sample analysis).
- If these samples qualify, we would then try some loads at one of our plants (trial).
- Based on a positive outcome of the trial, we develop a regular sourcing relationship.
